For the Price, Great Starter YoYoOct 10, 2010

The Duncan "Wheels" yoyo is a classic, and it's been issued by Duncan through the years several times. There are actually quite a few variations on the Wheels, from mag spokes to straight spokes, to hub-only. Also, the center comes with red or white plastic, sometimes the printing is in silver, sometimes in white, and not always on both side. Apparently even though not indicated, the one you get may not necessarily be the one pictured. I have 5 different variations of the Duncan Wheels, and who knows, there might be many more.
For the price, this is a great beginner's yoyo. It's got nice weight, better than other yoyos in the same price range (or even slightly more) that simply have hollow sides. The weight helps the yoyo sleep a little longer. It's very well-balanced, and it has the classic butterfly style design, with a wider gap and flared edges. It's good for doing both sleeper AND loop-de-loop or around-the-world type tricks, but the butterfly design is mainly for sleeper style tricks.
And the Wheels is a good sleeper. There's nothing high-tech about this yoyo, there's no PVC, brass or ball bearing hub; the string simply spins on the steel axle. If it sleeps too easily, one can adjust for that by either adding an extra loop or 2 to the string around the axle, and if it's a little hesitant to return to your hand, one can run the string across a bar of bee's wax (or a bee's wax candle ~ don't use "regular" candles, they have additives that don't help). Contrary to what it sounds like, wax does not make the yoyo more "slippery," it adds to the friction. The wax on the string will rub off on the insides of the yoyo and adds friction, making the string more "grabby," which will help snap the yoyo out of sleep.
The Duncan Wheels is pretty durable for the cost, too. I've bounced it off the floor and bonked it on furniture by accident a few times, and it never cracked or broke, nothing came loose. It's a fun hobby and for a beginner to amateur yoyoer, the Wheels yoyo will hold up to the abuse of learning new tricks. The package it comes on (mine came on a vacuum-formed blister card) should also give you an address where you can write to Duncan and for only the cost of postage & handling, they will send you like 25 replacement strings. When I wrote, they generously stuffed my return envelope with more than 150 strings! I can't guarantee they will for you, too, but it's definitely worth sending away for, being as strings wear out & will need to be replaced, if you plan on using your yoyo for more than a few hours. The string isn't exactly easy to replace on a yoyo that doesn't separate, but it can be done. You have to untwist the end of the string that goes around the axle enough till you can finally fit one side of the yoyo through. Personally I loop it around the axle 2-3 times; it's still enough to allow it to sleep, but it tightens it up a bit for doing other non-sleeper tricks, too, and the string tends to wear out less quickly.
For $5 you cannot find a better beginner's yoyo, but despite it being low cost, it'll perform like a $30 yoyo.

Pretty coolJun 23, 2007
By Alek Ratzloff Bottom line: probably the best yo yo I've seen from either me or my friends. It sleeps really well, and it shipped in very short time. The only setback that I found was that you can't open up the inside of the yo yo, so if there's a knot then you can't fix it. This is a really good buy, you get what you pay for. Oh yeah, the shipping is more than the product itself, so you'll be paying $9.00 for it total...

scratchedOct 04, 2011

Looked like a used yo-yo when I opened the package because it was very scratched, but I like it anyway. I'm not worrying too much as it will get plenty of scratches when I'm doing tricks. Good thing the yo-yo wasn't a gift.

Duncan WheelsOct 23, 2011
By Steve Jobs I bought this yoyo from ABCTOY4ME and it shipped very fast. This is a nice yoyo. It's good for beginners who want to learn string tricks like the Eiffel Tower or Jamaican Flag.

Good Yo-Yo but recieved usedJul 30, 2011
By The Lost Girl The Yo-Yo we got was exactly as it was pictured with the same colors and everything. For the price I think this toy is a GREAT starter yo-yo and will give my son hours upon hours of fun. When I opened the package, however, I noticed it had been opened and was not sealed. I assumed maybe the glue on the packaging just came undone. Not the case. The string was obviously NOT new, and shows signs of wear. Very disappointed at not recieving a NEW yo-yo as expected and we will have to spend even MORE money to buy yo-yo string. Next time, I will just buy from a local store. Maybe the boys in the warehouse at the Amazon packaging were bored and wanted to play with something they don't own.
