CHOO-CHOO!Jan 29, 2006
By Amanda Pelletier The kids got a real kick out of this little puzzle.
However... it's really annoying. The train sound goes off ALL the time, not just when the last piece is inserted.
I put the toy away on a shelf and everytime someone walks past, jostling it ever so slightly, it Choo-Choos.
Also, every time I open or shut the door to the room, it Choo-Choos.
Also, every time I turn on or off the overhead light in the room (oddly enough), it Choo-Choos.
And this is after seperating the pieces from the board by putting them in seperate bags in seperate rooms.
But like I said, the kids love it... and my fiance has a good sense of humor about it always going off when nobody's playing with it. He thinks it's funny. I'm wondering how long it'll take the batteries to die.
:)

Good product with one drawbackOct 11, 2006
By Cherlyn P First off, I will address the issue of the choo-choo sound constantly going off. The same thing happened to our puzzle, constantly! I realized that the sound is light-activated... when all of the pieces are put together, the "sensor" goes off because of the darkness. If there are any pieces missing and the lights go off, the same thing happens, because the sound is triggered by light/darkness.
Great product - fun and brightly colored. However, the little pegs that serve as the handles to each individual piece may come loose and disattach, posing a choking hazard for the child. Use with parental supervision!

One of the Best Puzzle Makers Out ThereJul 25, 2008
By M Riley I love Melissa and Doug puzzles - and this one is no exception. My son loves putting things together. As a mother, I get tired of the lights and sounds toys that over-stimulate children and teach them little anyway.
In regards to the sound "going off" - if it really bothers you that much then don't put the batteries in. I am THRILLED that the sound is not as loud as those other LeapFrog, Playskool and other toys that could deafen a child if you stay too close for too long. Of course the sound goes off when the lights go out - only if you have not cleaned up and put the toy away. We have NO problems at all and encourage anyway to buy it and other like it. My 18 month old can put it together on his own, so don't always go by the "recommended" age.
In regards to the peg problem, we are pretty strong people and never had a peg problem nor realized they could possibly come off. They are so small the worse case scenario would be the child will swallow it whole (because it is not big enough to choke anyone) and it comes out the other end.

Cool puzzle with soundAug 21, 2009

Very neat puzzle, well crafted pieces and beautiful artwork. The sound feature is a bit erratic though. Not sure when it's supposed to make the sounds, it works randomly, and was even making sound while not being played with at random intervals. Still a cool puzzle though.

Very good quality...Feb 03, 2009
By eyecore This is a very good quality wooden puzzle...it would take quite a bit of chewing, throwing, and jumping up and down on to break it. (Ours is still in good condition.)
As far as the "random" choo-choo's go - the sound is light activated; when the lights go out (as in, when all the puzzle pieces are put into place), it makes a choo-choo sound.
The only criticism for this is that the "recommended age" could probably be lowered to 2 or 2.5 years old. Our 3 year old loses interest quite quickly, and he loves trains (and liked simple puzzles like this about 6-12 months ago.) He still enjoys the CHOOOOCHOOOO sound of this puzzle, though.
