Great toy for children of many agesSep 18, 2010

About a year ago I helped out at my Sunday school church in the third thru fifth grade class rooms and noticed a small crowd of mostly boys playing with this toy. They were pretty quiet as they were concentrating & working together to build a huge tower. I thought the toy looked interesting enough that I purchased it for my then 4 yr old boy that Christmas. Not only does he love to play with it, but I was really surprised that my 2 and a half year old boy loved it as well and was not too young to play with it. I had purchased the 230 piece set. Now, this Christmas coming up, I will give them the 400 piece set. This will enable them to build larger things. I absolutely recommend this toy. Children will play with it for many years before outgrowing it. We have some damage to several of the straws only because our kitten chewed on them. Plan on buying a plastic tub to keep the pieces in, as the box it comes in is pretty cheap. Great toy for creating 3D cages the kids can climb into, cubes, and towers that can block off entire doorways. After almost a full year, my boys still love this toy.

I think this is one of the best toys out there-- perfect for when you need to give a birthday present and you don't know exactly what to get!! Even for the most basic (ie young) builders, this is fun-- they can build squares and cubes. But as the kids get older, these adapt to be used in much more complex designs. I would totally recommend them from preschool on up into upper elementary; and great for boys and girls alike! It's rare to find a toy that can span genders and ages like this one. Even I have been known to get on the floor and play with these. We've built boats big enough to climb in, rockets, towers, and many other things. Plenty of learning takes place along with the fun as the kids figure out how to make their ideas work.
Now if I could magically just get my kids to be better about picking up all the pieces when they are done... Stepping on one of these connectors with bare feet is the one reason I'd give it less than five stars!!! ;)

Fun for Parents TooJan 06, 2012

I purchased these as a Christmas gift for my daughter (4) and so far we both have enjoyed building with them. I like to buy toys with some staying power - toys that she'll play with for years and not just days - and these Straws and Connectors will fit the bill. They are stronger than I expected (we were able to place a sheet over a fort we built without any problem) and there are enough pieces in the box to build some really large creations. My daughter has no problem putting the pieces together, although she needs a little direction in keeping the building structurally sound. That's where I get to have fun! I wish the box the pieces came in was a little stronger for storage and there was a separate little box for the connectors. The box already has some rips and I ended up putting the connectors into a plastic container. That's a minor complaint compared to the fun we've been having. All in all, I'm very pleased with my purchase. A good value for the money.

I bought these straws for my 9 year old son for Christmas. He loves them! He had a wonderful time building the rocket ship, and I watched him as he followed the plans included and figured out his own adaptations. It kept him busy and happy! I was happy he was playing with something constructive that required thinking and no batteries! I also bought the 230 piece set for my nephew who has Aspergers and my sister said he loves it too! Easy to set up and easy to take down all by themselves.
