great toyAug 20, 2008

Great toy! My husband thought that the turtles would only move if you were constanly rolling the ball on top (not taking your hand off). But you simply spin the ball and the turtle takes off rolling across the floor.

Very Cool Little TurtlesFeb 21, 2009
By goonius These little turtles consist of a base with a perfectly smooth ball that can be removed and played with seperately, or set atop the turtles and spun backward to make the turtle go flying forward.
We bought these for our daughter's first birthday. While she is definitely too young to roll the turtles, she loves the little balls. They are just perfect for her hands and such a satisfying weight and smooth texture!
We know that eventually the turtles will catch on, and she and her older sister can race them.
All in all, a great and versatile toy. Well-made and worth buying!

the balls are the bestDec 05, 2009

I was surprised that the balls just rest on top of the legs, and that everything is actually really tiny. However, my babies LOVE the small wooden balls. Overall, the toy is just really cute and worth the money.

Nice idea, flawed executionMay 03, 2010
By Allegra Legrande Like other reviewers have said, the size of the 'shell' part is smaller than expected -- only about a 1.5" diameter. If you have any other HABA sets, the sphere is identical/interchangeable.
The balls/spheres themselves are nice enough for my daughter to play with. They are not attached to the turtle bases. They make nice noises like billiard balls as they clack against one another.
However, the balls/spheres/turtle shells only loosely sit on top of the 'turtle' base (actually on top of the 4 smaller balls), making the base pretty useless for anything other than display purposes. It would be neat if the spheres had contrasting colors so that you could see the big ball spinning on top as the turtle rolls across the floor... but, the balls are solid colors. So why the lack of attachment to the base? Why the bother even designing it so that the upper sphere can rotate?
It takes an adult/much older kid to push the turtles without the top sphere rolling/pushing right off. You have to pretty much push the base, (or push slightly down on the sphere as you roll it), and it needs to be over a very smooth surface (like wood floors). But, by the time that a kiddo is big enough to master this delicate balance of push-down&forward or to push only the base and not the top, the potential 'fun' involved in playing with such a simple toy has passed. (IOW: to have a turtle 'race' your kid needs to be older, but by the time your kid is older, they probably want more sophisticated toys.)
The turtles would have been better if they were a bit larger, and the sphere should have a way to lock into the turtle base. Or, contrasting colors (on the sphere) at the very least.
But, the colors themselves are nice and pretty and bold, and the toys are well constructed, if not well designed.

By Susan L. Edwards In the picture it looks like the turtles are one piece, but the ball and the "wheels" are separate. The ball is too small for the age listed and a choking hazard for any children under three, also too complicated for a young child to put the toy together in order to play with how it was intended.
