| | | Description: | | This is a great kit for the young rock hound where he/she can learn to test, classify & identify the three types of general rocks. Included in this Rock Science Kit are five rocks in each of the 3 major rock classifications: Igneous: Igneous rocks are called fire rocks and are formed either under or above ground. Underground, they're formed when the melted rock, called magma, deep within the earth becomes trapped in small pockets. As the magma pockets cool slowly underground, the magma becomes igneous rocks. Igneous rocks are also formed when volcanoes erupt. Metamorphic: Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have "morphed" into another kind of rock. These rocks were once igneous or sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary: For thousands, even millions of years, little pieces of earth have been eroded--broken down and worn away by wind & water. These little bits of our earth are washed downstream where they settle to the bottom of the rivers, lakes, & oceans. Layer after layer of eroded earth is deposited on top of each. These layers are pressed down more and more through time, until the bottom layers slowly turn into rock. Learning is easy with the way each rock is numbered & referenced from the Identification chart, where you find the name & type of each rock. Great classroom source for your next geology lesson, or for use as a science fair project. Anyone will definitely enjoy learning with this hands-on Rock Science Kit! Whether you're a young student learning geology, or a rock hound by hobby, this is a great way to learn about rocks! Includes: * Instructions and Rock Identification Key: Provides instruction identifying common rocks. * Rock Specimens: The 15 specimens in this kit are examples of common rocks that have distinct physical characteristics. * Magnifying Lens: This is one of the most important tools for a petrogolist, because identifying rocks involves close observation. Warning: Choking hazard due to small parts. Not for children under 3 years old. | | | Features: | |

Ok itemNov 07, 2011
By N. S. Vandaele This rock kit is only ok. The rocks are fine but the labels that were supposed to come on the rocks had almost all fallen off. And the rocks had gotten moved all around inside the box before I even opened it. Since the rocks were no longer labeled correctly or in the right spot in the tray they came in, it was very hard for me to identify them. Not very useful for teaching my kids about them when I can't even tell which type of rock they are.

Small SamplesFeb 01, 2012
By M. Trowbridge This is the second set I purchased at the same time as the mineral set. Both sets by this company have very small mineral and rock samples. None of the samples fill the cells provided like shown in the photo or on the front of the box. If you don't mind small samples then this does give you 15 different samples of rocks. Just really little ones.

Not markedJan 22, 2012
By Britt They really need to figure out a way to mark the rocks! Very frustrating. The rocks bump around in the box and get jumbled. On sale it's worth it, if you have the $$ you might find a better set somewhere else.

Small, OK for the price.Mar 23, 2012
By Felix L I agree with the other reviewers, they really need to use better glue to attach the labels. The samples are also quite small, less than 3/4" in average. Again, the price is right, considering the probable difficulty of gathering all these samples. If you have ever been to an "educational" store such as Lakeshore, you know this is a good deal!
Great educational toolApr 28, 2012
By Jenn I bought this as a birthday present for my best friend's son who was turning 5. He recent got into collecting and identifying rocks (because of me). I wanted to get something educational for him for his birthday and thought this would be an excellent first step into science for him. He was super excitied when he open the gift. The only issue I had was that some of the number had come off the rocks so they were not easily identifiable. I was able to re-glue them to the correct rock but one of the stickers were missing. All and all it was a great gift! I am glad I purchased it.
