Description:

Minerals are naturally-occurring, solid substances composed of chemical elements. This means that minerals, ranging from salt to rubies, are made up of compounds of elements that appear on the periodic table. Each type of mineral has a specific chemical composition and consistent physical properties. They are inorganic, not living or made up of living things. Minerals form crystalline structure, which give their rough texture. A rock by comparison is a naturally occurring solid aggregate of minerals. Rocks and minerals are fun to study because there is so much variety in colors and crystals. The Mineral Science Kit is a great way to start your study of mineralogy. Whether you're a student learning geology, or a rock hound by hobby, this kit is a great way to learn about minerals. An awesome educational toy for the science classroom! Includes: * Instructions and Mineral Identification Key: Provides instruction identifying common minerals. * Mineral Specimens: The 15 specimens in this kit are examples of common minerals that have distinct physical characteristics. You can perform tests to identify them and check your results with the included key. Then you'll be ready to identify specimens of your own. * Magnifying Lens: This is one of the most important tools for a mineralogist, because identifying minerals involves close observation. * Nail: A nail is one of the many common items you can use to test the hardness of your specimens, along with a fingernail, penny, and piece of glass. * Streak Plate: A streak plate is used to determine the color of a mineral in powder form. Warning: Choking hazard due to small parts. Not for children under 3 years old. Box Size: 7.25in (18.42cm) x 5.00in (12.70cm) x 1.50in (3.81cm) Recommended for ages 8 and older.

I also got this for a classroom unit on minerals, but was disappointed with the product. Most of the mineral samples were half the size shown in the pictures, and one was totally missing!! The magnifying glass that came with is a joke - it is seriously about the size of my thumb.
I guess I got what I paid for, but I would consider spending just a bit more money on something more substantial.

2Small samplesFeb 01, 2012

Not a bad little starter kit but the image they show in the photo description of this item shows the samples to be quite a bit larger than they are in reality. Especially the biotite sample which is incredibly small. Only ONE of the samples included in the box comes even close to filling the cell provided for it as is shown in the photo. Most fill a quarter of the space or less. There are several stickers that were used to identify the samples that were loose in the box. If you don't have a means of obtaining samples and want to get started on learning about minerals this set will get you started but beyond that, the samples are very very small.

5TS MINERAL KITApr 16, 2012

I am a retired National Board Certified science teacher volunteering in elementary schools. The kit was perfect for teaching minerals to younger children. Samples are small but easy for younger children to handle. I numbered the samples, the cubbies and box to make it easier for children to re-align samples when finished with hands-on activities.

2Missing samplesJan 22, 2012

The mineral collection is missing the pyrite and another sample (can't remember which one it is right now) They replaced it with copies of other minerals already in the box. We tried to figure out what each mineral one but gave up after 1/2 hour when we realized there were at least 2 samples missing.

2Could Be Great But It's Not Even GoodJan 16, 2012

My 8-year old son received this rock kit from his grandma for Christmas. He was so excited to explore the specimens but they arrived in such poor condition that he quickly lost interest. They are all supposed to be numbered but ours arrived with a box of miscellaneous rocks and various number stickers (some missing) all loose in the box. Only two of the specimens still had their numbers intact. My son and I even tried to make a game of trying to figure out which numbers go with which rocks, using the picture from the front of the box and a few rocks and mineral books that we had on hand. This would have been great but as one may know, the look and feel among rocks and minerals is quite varied, and trying to identify these specimens turned into an exasperating venture for both of us. We put it away in hopes that we might feel like trying again another day. Shame on Toysmith for not making this a better product. I realize the cost was quite low but do they really want a reputation for making cheap toys/items? I hate plastic but just simply shrink-wrapping the tray would have at least kept things intact during shipping.
