Melissa & Doug Puzzles: one of the BEST toys for kids!Mar 15, 2010 My almost 4-year old and just-turned-six year old grandsons are hooked on Melissa and Doug puzzles. They spread them out on the floor and they---the boys---move around them as needed to put them together. They have to be able to look at the puzzle pieces and "see" them from all sides and aspects and from up or down. Dad usually helps, but not always, and not normally once they've done one a few times. The biggest "issue" is, of course, putting the pieces back in the box when done!
They tend to want to do them over and over and are really proud of their ability to finish them, especially the big 100 piece puzzles (although they also have the 48 piece puzzles as well).
The pieces ARE larger than the usual puzzles for kids, but I think that is all to the good. It helps them see the shapes and the picture itself better. It requires patience and thinking and---in their case---working together.
I can think of few things that would be more beneficial for learning to think critically, to see in patterns, to use eye-hand coordination and most of all, to do things themselves, in the actual world, as opposed to passive "watching" on TV---or, worse--spending time with video games (a problem with a teen brother in the house!)
All in all an excellent investment as a toy, a learning tool, and highly recommended.

Too big, Picture on Box ClutteredNov 12, 2009 This is a very nice puzzle. It's high quality and nicely detailed making it easy to do. My son really likes this puzzle. However, it is way too big. Now that he does 100 piece puzzles he doesn't need the pieces to be so big. I guess that it's for doing on carpet, but it makes the pieces difficult for him to reach. Also, the front of the box is really cluttered and can't be used as a key for doing the puzzle the first time.
