Entertaining, but has problems setting upAug 16, 2010 I bought this particular Elmo cellphone because my daughter loves playing with cellphones (especially grabbing my blackberry) and she loves Elmo. So what better combination! The problem is that even after following all the instructions - I could not get it to say my daughter's name. Instead, it just kept on using the default name of Michael. I researched it on-line and finally found out the problem - for whatever reason the toy could not get out of demo mode (even though there was no tab left to pull. i eventually had to take the plastic carton it came in to push it in the little slot on the back right hand corner and that did the trick! This was after spending 1 hour downloading and redownloading.
After all that my daughter only seemed mildly interested in it. Ah well.
Decent toy if you have 3 hours to waste getting it to workJul 17, 2010 My daughter received this toy as a gift for her 1st birthday. In the moment I removed the phone from the package and threw away the rest not realizing the phone could be "personalized". This is where my troubles began. I thought the other reviews describing how difficult this phone is to program with your child's name were exaggerating but they were not. It took me, a very electronics savvy person, exactly 2.5 hours to get it to work. Here are some tips that I hope will save you some trouble:
1. This is NOT MAC OS compatible. If you have do not have access to a PC you are out of luck.
2. You need your own mini-USB cord. These cords come with most digital cameras and most people have one lying around the house already.
3. Not sure if this came with a CD since I threw the packaging away. This website has the software, list of downloadable names, and download instructions:
[...]
4. If you do not find your child's name or it is pronounced incorrectly, try and alternate spelling or names that sound like your child's name. Elmo's "accent" is so strong I used an entirely different spelling of my child's name but it sounded exactly like I pronounce her name.
I hope this review saves you some time. There are 2.5 hours of my life wasted that I will never get back. Good luck!
NO MAC VERSIONJul 10, 2010 Don't get this it has not support for apple.
it would take a developer one day to set this up at Mattel.
what lack of vision.

How to fix the demo problemJul 07, 2010 Ok, after reading the reviews regarding the phone being stuck in demo mode, I took mine apart and looked at it.
Looking at the back of the phone on the bottom right, there is a small slot where the demo tab goes in. If you remove it, you SHOULD be able to program it with your kid's name. If that's not the case, take out all the screws (and the batteries) and open the phone. across from where that slot is, there is a tiny white switch, that flips depending on whether or not the tab is in. Using a small screwdriver (or something similar) toggle it to the left (against the case). That should do it!
If not, flip it back and forth until it "springs" against the case. You'll then be able to plug it in and program it.

Thanks for Nothing! Not for Mac UsersFeb 22, 2010 What kind of toys are being produced only for PC users nowadays? MAC users are unable to download a name because the process involves downloading a .exe program that requires a PC. Leapfrog has got it right! No .exe program required to download a child's name onto the leapfrog toys. It does it right from the website while the toy is plugged in. Inexcusable Fisher-Price, Mattel, and Sesame Street! I'm glad my child received this as a gift and that I did not pay for this toy. The box was thrown away so I cannot exchange it. I guess the kids at church will have fun with it when I donate it.
