Amazing find turns into a broken dissapointmentJun 03, 2008
By Mom To Three I was initially really pleased with this toy, as it is big and heavy and has excellent detailing. It's definitely not another flimsy plastic toy. My son was very happy and went through a number of cap rings those first few days. Unfortunately, as a few other reviews noted, there are some small plastic parts inside and they just don't hold up. I think ours made it about 4 months.
I don't know why it didn't occur to the manufacturer that a tiny piece of plastic isn't a good choice for holding together two pieces of large, heavy metal. My son is begging for a new gun, but I don't want to hand over another $[...] for something that will inevitably break a few weeks or months later.

We bought this becuase it looked like it was all metal, however there is a small plastic part inside that broke rather quickly causing the gun not to stay shut.

Old West FunOct 28, 2006
By V. Shenk Great authentic looking pistol. Works smoothly and provides your little cowpoke hours of cowboy imagination. Sometimes tough to find 12 shot ring caps available and the holster belt was not as nice as I had hoped it would be.

Well worth the price - well built, consistent firing gun.Jun 13, 2007

This item was purchased to assist in gun breaking my upland bird pointing dogs. I wanted a gun that was relaible in both sound and performance. This was by far the best in both catergories out of 5 cap gun models purchased. I've fired it ~100 times without a misfire. The caps are louder then roll caps and other plastic ring caps. I purchased two of these guns and filled one of their hollow cylinders with model rocket parachute packing tissue for when the gun is first introduced with soft dogs.
There are a few down sides to the gun. There is no self ejector for the ring cap. After firing it gets rather jammed in the cylinder and requires a pocket knife to extract. Care needs to be taken that it doesn't break open when pulled from the holster. And lastly the holster doesn't have a trigger strap to prevent it falling out while moving about the field. [...].

Good cap gun for an adult or a big kid at heart.Mar 12, 2011
By Navid I bought 3 of these guns. The Big Tex Holster Set was for myself. Billy the Kid 8 Shot Cap Gun for my 4 yr. old who needs 2 hands to pull the trigger. And a Johnny Reb Pistol & Holster Set for my 7 yr. old daughter.
Big Tex is the biggest of the 3 and will fit the hands of an adult (male, medium/large hands) comfortably. The Johnny Reb is slightly bigger than the Billy the Kid gun. But the handle and trigger assembly of both the Johnny Reb and Billy the Kid are about the same size as the black plastic 8 shot cap guns found at various retailers. The bigger size of the Big Tex makes it easier to spin the gun with your index in the trigger guard than the other 2 cap guns. Great when you just finished your duel and you want to re-holster your gun with some style. It can be done with the other 2 cap guns but not on the vertical plane.
The better one of the three in material is the Billy the Kid. The catch that holds the front section of the gun to the trigger assembly is metal. Both the Big Tex and Johnny Reb's are made of plastic. Other reviewers have stated that through time, these will break. This was a concern of mine but I knew that if I could take the gun apart, I could fabricate another out of aluminum. This maybe the deciding factor for you if you want a quality gun that will last more than a season or two of play.
The loudest of the three is the Big Tex cap gun. There is definitely a distinct ring to the sound when you fire it. The other 2 cap guns are muffled when fired. It's safer for the kids but takes away from the characteristic of it being a better cap gun. The only drawback of the Big Tex cap gun is that it's a 12 shot. 12 shot rounds are more expensive, have suffered in quality in manufacturing and are not as loud as the 8 shot rounds are. The solution is to cut an 8 shot at one end, chamber that and add an additional half from another 8 shot to make the 12 shot. So for every 3 8 shot rounds you have, you can make 2 12 shots for the Big Tex.
The 36 cap pack at Walmart for $1.50 (made in Germany) works really well. Noticeably louder than the cheaper caps found at the Dollar Stores. I haven't ordered any caps online so I can't comment on those.
