Not a child's toy, suitable only for static display.Jan 16, 2012
By Dylan P. My son received several sets of Laser Pegs from relatives on Christmas, including the AC module and sound modules, and out-of-the-box there were a number of non-functioning parts. I had him set the whole set aside and finally went through the kit today, and this is a list of parts that do not function: 1x 90 degree peg, 2x Y shaped peg, 2x Square laser peg, 1x Wheel laser peg, 1x Cord. Please note that my testing methodology included reconnecting suspect parts to known good parts (parts which conducted to downstream components and lit properly). I used the AC power module with fewer than 10 parts connected in series to test each part.
Beyond the 7 out of 80 components that were bad out of the box, another 25% of the pieces make poor connection and have to be adjusted and readjusted to stay lit. The construction quality is poor, definitely not a toy that will last very long. Battery life is poor, requiring the device be tethered to a wall outlet to use for any length of time. If you're a parent, you know that children like to turn on lit toys and leave them on; this device is not suited for extended use (longer than 10 minutes at a time) unless you're comfortable with your child plugging toys into the wall and extending cords across the floor.
DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE NAME OF THE KITS: The parts have a very fragile feel to them, and while none have physically broken yet, it's clear that they won't last long with even moderate use. You might be able to make a dune-buggy shaped toy, but don't try rolling it; the "wheels" should have been called "balls" becuse they are NOT meant to roll.
ANOTHER FUN TIP: The power module, if you decide not to burn through bateries like crazy and opt for the AC adapter, has a wonderful warning printed on the underside (do kids read these?) which informs you: "Remove all batteries before plugging unit into wall. A short circuit will occur and damage the power supply." In my high-school electronics class we learned how to put a protection circuit in, and I've never heard of a child's toy short circuiting BY DESIGN when plugged in.
